Goodsell Observatory at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, emerged as a major center for astronomy, timekeeping, and scientific work in the late 19th century. Completed in 1887 to replace an earlier campus observatory, it grew from professor William W. Payne’s early astronomy program and became widely known for its precise daily time signals, which railroads, cities, banks, and jewelers across Minnesota relied on. Supported by James J. Hill’s donation, the larger building housed important instruments and later contributed to research, publishing, and weather reporting. Its preserved Romanesque Revival structure and historic equipment make it an unusually complete 19th-century observatory still used for teaching.
