Cerro Castellan is a 3,294-foot butte in Brewster County, Texas, in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park near the Rio Grande. One of the area’s most recognizable landforms, it rises more than 1,000 feet above Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive in just half a mile, giving it exceptional visual prominence. Its rock layers record Big Bend’s volcanic past, with Burro Mesa Rhyolite capping older Wasp Spring Tuff, Chisos Tuff, and Bee Mountain Basalt. In the park’s hot, arid climate, little runoff comes from its slopes. Its Spanish name was officially adopted in 1939, and the nearby former village of Castolon took its name from the peak.
