Pine Creek Gristmill in Wildcat Den State Park, Muscatine County, Iowa, grew from Benjamin Nye’s early milling ventures after settlement opened in 1833. After an initial mill near the Mississippi River was washed out, Nye built on Pine Creek, adding a sawmill and then a gristmill before constructing the present building in 1848. The mill was central to local development, alongside Nye’s store and post office and the growth of Montpelier. Later owners included Robert Patterson and Herman Huchendorf. Its paired 1876 bridge aided farmers reaching the site, and the mill preserves changing nineteenth- and early twentieth-century milling technology in a building that still largely resembles its 1920s appearance.
