Rebuilt in 1856, the Maramec "Cold Blast" Furnace provided area settlers with all necessary farm, industrial, and household iron equipment. During the Civil War, Maramec Iron Works supplied the Union Army with cannonballs and iron plate for gunboats patrolling the Mississippi River. The furnace was "blown out," or shut down, in 1876, ending the 50-year tenure of Maramec Iron Works.
