Mackinac State Historic Parks encompasses living history museums and historic sites in Mackinaw City and on Mackinac Island, including Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, established in 1889, which guided ships through the Straits of Mackinac and now offers tours, demonstrations, and the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Museum; Historic Mill Creek, where the creek’s power cut timber into lumber at one of the oldest industrial sites on the Upper Great Lakes and where sawyers demonstrate a pit saw, visitors can experience the sawmill, and trails lead through the North Woods; Historic Downtown Mackinac, which includes the Mackinac Art Museum, Biddle House with the Mackinac Island Native American Museum, Benjamin Blacksmith Shop, American Fur Co. Store and Dr. Beaumont Museum, and McGulpin House; Colonial Michilimackinac, established in 1715, an 18th-century fort and fur trading village with artillery and musket firings, hearth cooking, crafts, and North America’s longest ongoing archaeological dig, presenting life at the dawn of the American Revolution; and Fort Mackinac, established in 1780, where cannon blasts, rifle fire, marching soldiers, and exhibits in the oldest building in Michigan and 13 other historic structures present military training, battles, medical treatments, and family life within the fort.
