The Neusiok Trail is a 20.4-mile hiking route in North Carolina’s Croatan National Forest, stretching from the Neuse River to the Newport River through cypress swamps, hardwood ridges, longleaf-pine savannah, and pocosin. Its name preserves an Indigenous name recorded in 1584 for this area and also reflected in the nearby Neuse River. Built beginning in 1971 by the Carteret County Wildlife Club with the U.S. Forest Service, the trail took five years to complete and remains one of eastern North Carolina’s longest continuous hiking routes. It later became part of the statewide Mountains-to-Sea Trail and continues to serve as an active backcountry path through the Croatan’s coastal ecosystems.
