James Madison, fourth President of the United States and Father of the Constitution, was born at Port Conway on March 16, 1751. His mother was staying at her paternal home, Belle Grove, 400 yards east, when he was born. Madison's father, James Madison, Senior, lived in Orange County, and Madison later had his home at Montpelier in that county.
