Stepping Stones Light
Transportation
Stepping Stones Light is a compact Victorian-style red brick lighthouse in Long Island Sound off Nassau County on New York’s North Shore, rising just one and a half stories above the reef it marks and retaining an unusually house-like form. Still an active United States Coast Guard aid to navigation, it is also tied to a much older Siwanoy, or Minneford, tradition that linked the reef to the Devil’s escape across the Sound, giving rise to the name “The Devil’s Stepping Stones.” Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, it later passed to the Town of North Hempstead and became the focus of rehabilitation efforts supported by public grants.
