Ernest Hemingway's 1925 satiric novel, The Torrents of Spring, is set mainly in Petoskey. He knew about Braun's Restaurant at 210-212 Howard Street, and in the novel he used the layout of the restaurant, which he called "Brown's Beanery The Best by Test," to create three important scenes in the book. In one of them, a newcomer eating at the Beanery is so charmed by an elderly waitress that they soon marry, but when they return there to celebrate, the husband is stirred by seeing a lovely young waitress.
