On the south side of Collinsville, Illinois, the Brooks Catsup Bottle water tower became both a working piece of industrial infrastructure and a regional roadside landmark. Built in 1949 for the nearby Brooks catsup plant, it was designed in the shape of a company bottle at the idea of president Gerhart S. Suppiger, turning a utility structure into a memorable corporate symbol. Its unusual scale made it famous, and a volunteer-led restoration in the 1990s saved it after the city declined ownership because of repair costs. Recognized for its novelty architecture and local importance, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and remains a notable survivor of America’s roadside age.
