During the Mine Run Campaign, Meade advanced south from the Rapidan River to attack Lee but found him in an entrenched position here on November 28, 1863. Heavy skirmishing continued until December 1. Meade then judged Lee's lines too strong to assault and retired across the Rapidan in time to avoid a Confederate counterattack.
