Midway, a prehistoric Upper Mississippian Oneota site in western Wisconsin near the Black and Mississippi rivers, preserves evidence of a village community rather than a brief camp. Excavations beginning in the early 1920s and continuing in 1929 and 1964 uncovered pits, a mussel shell heap, artifacts, food remains, and a burial. Animal bones, plant remains, and tools indicate farming, hunting, fishing, and gathering, and suggest at least a semi-sedentary, possibly year-round settlement. Its large collection of mostly shell-tempered pottery, especially Allamakee Trailed wares, connects the site to the Orr focus of Oneota culture. With no European trade goods present, the occupation is thought to date to around A.D. 1500.
