At Whetstone Point, a shore battery was established in 1776 and a star fort was begun in 1794. It was later named for Washington’s Secretary of War. In 1795 the reservation was partly acquired by the United States, and in 1814 its gallant defence during a British bombardment inspired the writing of The Star-Spangled Banner. In 1838 the full reservation was ceded.
