Dedicated on Memorial Day, 1922, to the Sons of Delaware who joined the forces of their country in the Great War, this monument was presented through architectural detail and messages in bronze. Its features included a 40-foot-tall monumental pylon in classical detail with bronze lanterns, memorial messages with quotations, an American eagle perched on the two continents where the wars were fought, a warrior's helmet on a shield, and a keystone of the arch in bold relief. Details of the design appeared on both sides of the pylon, and the original 1919 design sketch was by architect Vance W. Torbert.
