Richard Richardson was an early plantation owner in this area, a Commissioner of St. Mark's Church who donated land for its construction, a magistrate, and a delegate to the First and Second Provincial Congresses. During the Revolution he served as a colonel in the Snow Campaign and later became a brigadier general. Six Governors of South Carolina were among his descendants.
