The site of Garfield's Hotel and Tavern, established in 1810, was one of the earliest stopping places on Lake George. Other hotels on this site were Arthur's Phoenix and Beachside with the Cave Bar. The original owner was Nathaniel Garfield, a Revolutionary War soldier. The Garfields were political leaders in Hague, and the family plot is in the Hague Heritage Cemetery.
