The Chelsea Public Library building was erected by the Board of Control in 1909 and dedicated to the service of the citizens of Chelsea in 1910 as the gift of Andrew Carnegie. It stands on the site of Chelsea's first free public library building, which was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1908; that earlier building and the land on which the present building stands were the gift in 1884 of Eustace C. Fitz.
