Water from a point about a mile upstream where the mill race converged with the Little Patuxent River at a wooden dam filled the race and originally flowed directly through the Old Weave building, driving the looms and spinner equipment there and in the Carding building through an elaborate system of shafts, belts, and pulleys. After construction of the New Weave building in 1916, the mill race was diverted into a huge flume behind cast iron bar screens that kept debris and fish from entering the Wheel House below, where the water passed through a cast iron drum 12 feet in diameter and 30 feet long. The dam was destroyed in the early 1950's.
