In Staten Island’s St. George neighborhood, the National Lighthouse Museum opened in 2015 in the former Foundry Building of the United States Lighthouse Service General Depot, later the Staten Island Coast Guard Station. Devoted to lighthouse history and the people who kept the lights, it emerged from a long effort that began in 1998, when a national search selected the St. George site for a lighthouse center and museum. The project faced years of delays, weak fundraising, rising costs, and setbacks after the September 11 attacks before reviving in 2013. Its waterfront setting adds historical weight because the building itself once served the lighthouse system it now interprets.
