Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, is a 170-acre botanical preserve built around an 80-acre blackwater swamp explored by boat and along 4.5 miles of trails. The site began as part of Dean Hall, a rice plantation established in 1750, where the present swamp was excavated as a freshwater reservoir. After years of disuse, Benjamin Kittredge bought the property in 1909, and during the Depression workers developed the trails before the gardens opened to the public in 1931. Later additions broadened it into a nature attraction, and despite storm and flood closures, it reopened in 2019 as a celebrated Lowcountry landscape and film location.
