In 1832 Henry Audulf, a native of Germany and the first settler here, gave 8 acres of land for two churches and a cemetery. Methodist and Baptist churches were built, but a tornado destroyed both a few years later. Only the Methodists rebuilt on the site, and in 1912 the congregation moved to a new church. The cemetery alone remains of Audulf’s gift, and it is the resting place of many of Richland’s earliest citizens, including Audulf’s son John, his granddaughter Mary Ann Audulf, and her husband, Dr. Jubilee Smith, a physician, minister, prominent Mason, pharmacist, and dentist who also served the community.
