South Mountain State Park extends along nearly the full length of South Mountain in western Maryland through Washington and Frederick counties, forming a long protected corridor rather than a single tract. It connects with several other public lands on the mountain and includes Maryland’s 40-mile section of the Appalachian Trail. The park is known for prominent overlooks such as High Rock, Black Rock, Annapolis Rock, White Rocks, and Weverton Cliffs, making it a major destination for hiking and valley views. It also preserves part of the South Mountain Battlefield and supports camping and hunting, giving it significance for both recreation and historic landscape preservation.
