The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment in downtown Oakland is devoted to digital art and video games, with a mission of “playable preservation” that keeps games accessible as working experiences while teaching new creators. Founded by Alex Handy after a two thousand eight discovery of game EPROMs, it opened in twenty eleven and combined exhibits with preservation, education, and archives, including the GamePro collection. Its work has included helping revive Habitat as NeoHabitat and supporting a copyright exemption for abandoned online validation systems. Despite relocations, a ceiling collapse, and pandemic closure, it reopened and continues as an active community space in Oakland.
