At the north shore of Rodman Reservoir, also known as Lake Ocklawaha, a human-made landscape reflects centuries-old dreams of finding a water route across Florida. Built in 1968 as part of the Cross Florida Barge Canal, the reservoir's 9,000-acre basin was created by a 306-ton Crusher machine, dredges, and a dam. As the canal took shape, scientists and activists campaigned against the expensive and destructive project, and although the canal lost support, the reservoir remained. Just south of the Kenwood boat basin, a straight human-made channel gives way to the curving Ocklawaha River, marking where work on the canal stopped. In 1971, President Richard Nixon ended the project by executive order, bringing dredging to a sudden halt, and in 1992 the lands were designated a greenway.
