During the uplift that created the Big Horn Mountains, faults and fractures formed in the rocks. Thick layers of limestone in this area fractured parallel to the valley. When a section of the Earth’s crust sank, huge chunks broke loose from a layer of rock, creating the massive boulder field in this area. The geometric shapes of the rocks make the boulders resemble the toppled buildings of a fallen city.
