Ezra Meeker, a pioneer, preservationist, and visionary, was largely responsible for locating and preserving the Old Oregon Trail. He placed this monument here on May 9, 1906. For the centennial of the monument, a time capsule of artifacts was placed beneath its base to be opened after 100 years, and it was rededicated on July 27, 2006.
