Sentinel Dome is a granite dome on Yosemite Valley’s south wall in Yosemite National Park, celebrated for its broad summit and uninterrupted 360-degree views of the valley, surrounding high country, and landmarks such as Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, North Dome, and Basket Dome. Its exposed top also makes it a favored stargazing site. Known originally by a Southern Sierra Miwok name pronounced Sak'-ka-du-eh, it was later called South Dome and then Sentinel Dome because its shape suggested a watchtower. It is also linked to the famous Jeffrey Pine, photographed from 1867 onward, which died in 1976 and stood until 2003.
