The Larrabee Garrison, also known as Le Fort Larrabee, stood near this spot and was constructed between 1714 and 1722 by William and Stephen Larrabee. It covered more than an acre, had thick timber walls, and contained five houses within its walls. During times of hostilities with Native Americans, people living in the surrounding vicinity took refuge there. In the early 1900s, historian William Barry placed a large granite monument just off this path at the site. The graves of early settlers, including Stephen Larrabee, are near the monument, but their markers are no longer visible.
