In Portola, California, this former Western Pacific locomotive facility preserves the history of the Western Pacific Railroad through one of the most complete surviving collections associated with a single railroad family. Operated by the Feather River Rail Society, founded in 1983, it is especially strong in diesel-era equipment, with 29 diesel locomotives as well as electric and steam power, rolling stock, maintenance vehicles, archives, and workers’ personal collections. Visitors can board and explore many of the vehicles, and notable attractions include excursion service, a program allowing supervised locomotive operation, and major efforts to preserve equipment and stories connected with the California Zephyr.
