Battery A, First Michigan Artillery, commanded by Lieutenant George W. Van Pelt and serving in Scribner's Brigade, Baird's Division, Thomas Corps, advanced with its brigade from Bird's Mill on the evening of the 18th and reached the intersection of the LaFayette and Chattanooga Roads at daylight of the 19th, then fought from several positions to this one. After firing sixty-four rounds of canister and shell, the battery was rushed by the enemy in overwhelming numbers, forcing its infantry support to fall back. The men stayed with the battery until the enemy's bayonets were at their breasts. Five guns were captured, one was taken safely from the field, and one gun was later recaptured. Lieutenant Van Pelt and five men were killed, six seriously wounded, and thirteen captured. During operations at Chattanooga, the battery held a position on Cameron Hill.
