In November 1838, during the Canadian rebellions, men fought and died in the Battle of the Windmill. One side fought to liberate Canada from British rule, while the other rallied to protect their homes or the established political order. The lighthouse at the site is a converted windmill around which the battle was fought. Fort Wellington, a few kilometres west in Prescott, was a gathering point for British troops at the time of the battle and still stands.
