Sandy Run Church, a Lutheran church thought to have been organized about 1765, is one of the oldest in the state. By 1774, the Rev. Lewis Hochheimer was minister there. The church was incorporated in 1788 as "The German Lutheran Church of Salem, on Sandy Run" and was located at the present site by 1806. The South Carolina Synod has met there several times. Buried in the cemetery is the Reverend Christian Theus, whose grave was moved there in 1932 from its original location near the Reformed Lutheran Church of the Congarees, once standing about 7 miles northwest in old Saxe-Gotha Township. From 1739 to 1789, Theus was pastor of the Congarees church and also the local school teacher.
