Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park preserves the ground of the Battle of Chickamauga and the Siege of Chattanooga in northwestern Georgia and southeastern Tennessee. Established through 1890 legislation and dedicated in September 1895, it became the first and largest national military park after veterans pressed to protect these battlefields. Union veterans Henry V. Boynton, Ferdinand Van Derveer, Henry M. Cist, Franklin Guest Smith, and Charles H. Grosvenor played important roles in its creation and early administration. Managed first by the War Department, it also served as Camp George H. Thomas during the Spanish-American War. Today it includes several Chattanooga-area battlefield units, and Moccasin Bend also preserves important American Indian archaeological evidence.
