Dinwiddie County, with an area of 521 square miles, was formed in 1752 from Prince George and was named for Robert Dinwiddie, Governor of Virginia from 1751 to 1756. General Winfield Scott was born in this county, and the battle of Five Forks took place there in 1865. Brunswick County, with an area of 557 square miles, was formed in 1720 from Prince George, Surry, and Isle of Wight. It was named for the House of Brunswick, which came to the throne of England in 1714, when George I was crowned king. Colonial Fort Christanna was in this county.
