Built in 1994, Plant 7 was constructed to support Plant 6 in the production of horizontal directional drilling products during a period of rapid growth for Vermeer in the 1990s, when demand rose as telecommunications utilities were installed underground around the world. Plant 6, built in 1985, had originally produced all rubber-tire products but was quickly overtaken by HDD rigs as that market expanded. Once connected by four tunnels, Plants 6 and 7 together occupied 400,000 square feet of space. After the 2018 tornado destroyed Plant 6, Plant 7 became a stand-alone building for the first time in its history. A new Plant 7 opened in September 2021 as the largest single manufacturing facility on the mile at 750,000 square feet, where team members build small and medium HDD rigs and walk-behind trenchers while continuing to develop new products.
