Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns is a limestone cave complex in South Dakota’s Black Hills, discovered in 1929 on the Duhamel family property near Rockerville and developed by Alex and Mamie Duhamel and their sons as a seasonal tourist attraction. Named by Black Elk in honor of Sitting Bull, it operated as a public show cave from 1934 to 2015 along a major route toward Mount Rushmore. Black Elk also staged the Duhamel Sioux Indian Pageant there for more than a decade to teach visitors about Lakota culture. After Bud Duhamel’s retirement, the family closed the caverns in 2015, and the property was sold in 2020.
