Betsy the Lobster is a large fiberglass sculpture in Islamorada, Florida, depicting an anatomically correct Caribbean spiny lobster and reflecting that species’ importance to South Florida culture. Created by Richard Blaze for a local restaurateur, it took five years to make, beginning in 1980, with most work done in Marathon before completion in 1985. After the commissioning restaurant closed, Tom Vellanti bought the sculpture and displayed it at Treasure Village. When that site became a school, Betsy went into storage until moving in 2009 to Rain Barrel Village, where it again became a prominent Florida Keys roadside attraction.
