The Madonna of the Trail honors the pioneer mothers of the covered wagon days. Near this site on the National Road stood the first toll-gate in Indiana. This highway, known as the National Old Trails Road, had once been a wilderness trail over which hardy pioneers made their perilous way seeking new homes in the dense forests of the great north-west.
