Cape Lookout National Seashore lies on barrier islands reached by a boat ride three miles offshore. The remote beaches offer horse watching, shelling, fishing, birding, camping, lighthouse climbing, and tours of historic villages, and visitors are advised to bring all needed food, water, and supplies and to carry their trash out. Spring temperatures generally range from 50 F to above 70 F, with common rain and wind. Summer temperatures usually range from 80 F to 100 F with high humidity of 80 to 90 percent and average wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph, and with little shade on the islands, plenty of water and an umbrella for sun protection are recommended. Fall temperatures usually range from the high 70 F to the upper 40 F. Winter temperatures usually range from 50 F to 32 F, and winds can be strong, so dressing in layers is advised.
