James Francis Thorpe won gold medals in both the pentathlon and decathlon in the same Olympics, the only Olympian ever to do so. In the pentathlon, he placed first in the broad jump at 23 feet 2.7 inches, first in the discus at 116 feet 8.4 inches, first in the 200-meter dash at 22.9 seconds, first in the 1,500-meter race at 4 min. 44.8 seconds, and third in the javelin at 153 feet 3 inches. In the decathlon, he placed first in the shot put at 42 feet 5.5 inches, first in the running high jump at 6 feet 1.6 inches, first in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.6 seconds, first in the 1,500 meter run at 4 min. 40.1 seconds, second in the running broad jump and discus, third in the 100 meter dash, javelin, and pole vault, and fourth in the 400-meter run. Thorpe finished the decathlon with 8,412.96 points out of a possible 10,000, ahead of his nearest competitor's 7,724.5, and his total stood as a record for 10 years. Sweden's King Gustav distributed the gold medals, shook Thorpe's hand, and told him, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world," to which Thorpe is said to have replied, "Thanks, King."
