Much of the Old Trace had been abandoned by the start of the Civil War, but the war left its mark on the road as it did across the South, with soldiers marching, camping, and fighting along portions of this historic route. A five minute walk on the Old Trace here leads to the gravesites of 13 unknown Confederate soldiers, a silent reminder of bygone days and of the great struggle out of which developed a stronger nation.
