Great Mound, a large Adena earthwork near Middletown in southwestern Ohio, stands about 43 feet high and 511 feet in circumference, making it the largest mound in Butler County and one of the largest surviving mounds in this part of the state. Set on a ridgeline, it commands wide views that led some late nineteenth-century observers to suggest such mounds may have been used for signaling. Although unofficial digging damaged the summit and uncovered bones and traces of fires, about three quarters remains undisturbed. Archaeologists see the mound’s scale as evidence of Adena social organization and their emphasis on honoring the dead, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
