Lyles-Sanders Cemetery
History
1
Originally serving the Lyles and Sanders families, this burial ground was established in 1860 when infant Susan Lyles was interred there. By 1899, people from outside the family who lived in communities such as Iron Mountain, Gould, Sulphur Springs, Oak Flat, and Glen Fawn began using it. The property was officially donated for cemetery use in 1923, and another acre was added in 1977. Its features include a Woodmen of the World monument, vertical stones, and obelisks. Interments include veterans of conflicts dating to the Civil War, and it continues to serve the area while remaining a chronicle of southern Rusk County pioneers.
