Canton, Missouri, the most westerly Missouri town on the Mississippi bank, was founded on May 30, 1830. Culver-Stockton, the first coeducational college west of the Mississippi, was established there in 1853 and overlooks the river bluffs. Federal Lock and Dam No. 20 was completed there in May 1934. Canton was the hometown of James S. Green, senator from 1857 to 1861, Frederick C. Hibbard, a noted sculptor, and James T. Lloyd, congressman from 1897 to 1917. This section of the Great River Road of Mid-America was developed in cooperation with the National Park Service, U.S. Bureau of Public Roads, Missouri Highway Commission, and Town of Canton, and was officially dedicated by Governor Phil M. Donnelly on March 10, 1956.
