Bluefields, named for the Blue family, was built by 1870. Annie Evans Blue, who died in 1912, received this land in 1872 from her father William Evans, who lived from 1804 to 1876 and was a Marion District planter, militia general, and state representative. Annie Blue and her husband, John Gilchrist Blue, who lived from 1829 to 1889, raised their family here. Born in North Carolina, John Gilchrist Blue was an attorney and Confederate officer who served as a South Carolina state representative from 1876 to 1880 and again from 1884 to 1885. Two of their sons became nationally prominent: Victor, who lived from 1865 to 1928, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, was promoted for heroism during the Spanish-American War, commanded a battleship during World War I, and retired as a rear admiral; Rupert, who lived from 1867 to 1948, graduated from the University of Maryland medical school, became surgeon general of the U.S. Public Health Service, and led efforts to eradicate bubonic plague in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
