The Nevada State Museum in Carson City occupies the former Carson City Mint, linking it directly to a major institution in Nevada’s mining-era history. The mint operated from 1870 to 1893, became known for the CC mint mark, and still houses Coin Press No. 1, its only surviving coin press. Opened as a museum in 1941, the site presents Nevada’s natural and cultural history from prehistoric times to the present. Its collections include geology, prehistoric life, silver mining, American Indian culture, Great Basin basketry, Old West firearms, Chinatown materials, slot machines, and the silver service made for the battleship USS Nevada.
