Orange County covers 359 square miles. It was formed in 1734 from Spotsylvania and was named for the Prince of Orange, who that year married Princess Anne, daughter of King George II. President James Madison lived in this county, and President Zachary Taylor was born here. Louisa County covers 516 square miles. It was formed in 1742 from Hanover and was named for the Queen of Denmark, daughter of King George II. Patrick Henry lived in this county for some years. The cavalry Battle of Trevilians was fought there in 1864.
