Sturgeon Point Light, on Lake Huron in northeastern Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, was built in 1869 to guide vessels past a reef extending far into the lake and to aid traffic moving into and out of Saginaw Bay. Part of a broader Great Lakes lighthouse expansion prompted by heavy ship traffic and repeated losses, it later worked with a nearby life-saving station, and its first keeper also led the surf team. A notable Cape Cod style station, it retains a rare 3½-order Fresnel lens and remained active after automation and electrification. Restored after years of decline, it still serves as both an operating light and a historic museum site.
