Capote Falls, on Capote Creek in the Sierra Vieja of far West Texas, is widely regarded as the state’s highest waterfall, with reported drops ranging from 150 to 175 feet. Fed by Capote Springs, it plunges from a volcanic rim into a canyon that forms an unusually lush refuge within an arid landscape. Long near borderland travel routes, the site was recorded by Antonio de Espejo in 1583 and later became part of Lucas Charles Brite’s cattle ranch in 1885. It is also a rare biological sanctuary, the only wild home of Hinckley’s columbine and habitat for distinctive birds, mammals, and reptiles.
