Robert A. Gilmour, born October 14, 1896, in Vintondale, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, came to Somerset Borough in 1926 and lived there until his death on December 21, 1980. Widely recognized as an industrialist, inventor, real estate developer, and philanthropist, he first gained insight into business during World War I with the 821st Aero Squadron, helping build airplanes in Indianapolis, Indiana, and train British Royal Air Force pilots to fly them. He patented the "Hosemaster" pistol-grip garden hose nozzle and held more than 30 patents during his lifetime. In 1950 he founded Gilmour Manufacturing Company, the original home of the Hosemaster, and under his guidance the company grew to distribute a variety of garden products recognized throughout the world for their quality while contributing significantly to the economic and cultural well-being of Somerset County. A leader in his community, he was regarded as astute, innovative, and always willing to help others, and many Somerset Countians credited him with enabling them to found their businesses, helping more local young people live, work, and raise their families in Somerset County.
